Joy Denalane – Born & Raised

Joy Denalane: Born & Raised

Hailing from Germany Ms Denalane has arrived out of nowhere to quash the hunger pains of fans of Mary J Blige and Faith Evans.
Taking R&B back to its roots, whilst adding a cool edge Denalane’s soul-drenched vocal glides flawlessly through all 15 tracks which was recorded in Philadelphia. Highlights of the album include collaboration with  Lupe Fiasco
Change’, smooth debut single ‘Heaven or Hell’, featuring Raekwon, and the excellent advise to ladies who love a bad-boy on ‘Let Go’.

Joe: ain't nothing like me

Joe: Ain't Nothing Like Me

Ladies, get ready to go weak at the knees; gentlemen, prepare to press ‘play’ for instant seduction…

After a four-year wait Joe returns…  what can only be described as a hughe new R&B album. Taking us back to our roots on this album Joe has teamed up with Justin, Omarion Rihanna, and Ne-Yo Nas features on the contagious ‘Get To Know Me’, cameos on mid-tempo groove ‘Let’s Just Do It’ feel-good number ‘Just Relax’.  You’ll still get plenty of Joe’s signature slow-jams and ballads.  The talented singer/ songwriter has been around since the early 90s and has worked along side with legends like Barry White, Tina Turner, G-Unit and Fat Joe.

Gordon Chambers – Love Stories

Gordon Chambers

Gordon Chambers take us on an extravaganza tour.  Gordon has one thing in common with Eric Roberson they both deliver their material in a very strong individual vocal style, Gordon's songwriting is second to none Those who have indulged themselves with material from Gordon Chambers  include, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Angie Stone, Patti LaBelle and the evergreen Isley Brothers.

Victor Fields

cover art

Mellow soul from Victor Fields  classic-style most of the tunes here are familiar ones from years back but they're done by Fields with an approach that's slightly jazzy, nice change from expected clichés you might associate with 70s soul covers, with enough difference from the originals to keep things interesting

Concert Review

The Best Disco in Town Live 2007
Friday 11th May
Colston Hall, Bristol

Rose Royce, The Three Degrees Odyssey & George McCrae

For those loyal disco fans that were looking for a night to reminisce of the good old days when we use to go out and actually enjoy ourselves, were not disappointed.  The atmosphere was buzzing and the range of people who attended ranged from the young who probably only knew of the tunes second time around or whose parents actually still had the old 12inch to the ones who were around for the first edition

The concert started out with the energetic (reformed) group Odyssey who had the audience up on their feet from their first song, when they started to sing Inside out there wasn’t a behind that was left on the seat, those who could or could not dance where up on their feet rocking and singing away to the music the night was set.

Now personally the only record I truly knew of George McCrae was Rock you Baby, but that man came out on the stage as if he was getting ready to party on down, looking at him for the age that he is (late 60’s) at a guess the man is a phenomenon.  When rock you baby came on the die hard fans who remember the bumps were hard at it trying not to dance themselves out of the aisle and looking in their faces you could see the pure enjoyment as they remembered the house parties when this track was large.

Prince Charles favorite group The Three Degrees came onto the stage as the original Divas but with grace and style.  These ladies looked good I bet there was many a woman out there in the audience who wishes that they looked half as good as these ladies did, they launched straight into classic songs in which they will always be remembered for their dance  routines and vocal harmonies are true and tight and we all sang along to the favorites i.e. A Woman in Love, take good Care of Yourself etc and one for the men Dirty ol Man…… they had the audience participate in the dance routines which we all remembered quite vividly as if it was yesterday.  Even though Sheila Ferguson was not present (she left in 1986) the group is still the longest running female group in history.

Rose Royce finished the night on a high, they came on the stage bouncing full of energy and had the audience full attention from beginning to end, they grooved it up and slowed it down effortlessly with humour and wit keeping the audience entertained at all times the crowd waited patiently to hear the song which we all wanted to hear and that was Car Wash the audience started clapping the signature tune over and over again and they were not to be disappointed.

The night ended on a high people left singing the tunes they longed to hear.  I enjoyed the night I would recommend anybody to catch the show you will have a memorable time and you will not be disappointed……

Artist of the month

 Barry White
Go to fullsize imageGo to fullsize image
Say the name Barry White and you'd be hard pressed to follow it with the name of any other recording artist with such a huge, following.  Born Barry Eugene White September 21st , 1944   in Galveston, Texas, Barry White grew up singing gospel songs with his mother and taught himself to play the piano.

Barry grew up in the high-crime areas of South Los Angeles, where he joined a gang at the age of 10. At 17, he was jailed for four months for stealing $10,000 worth of tyres.
After being jailed, White left gang life and began a musical career at the dawn of the 1960s After moving from Texas to South Central Los Angeles, White made his recording debut at the tender age of 11, playing piano on Jesse Belvin's "Goodnight My Love." He made his first record when he was 16 with a group called the Upfronts. The song was called "Little Girl" on a local L.A. label called Lummtone Records.  He worked for various independent labels around Los Angeles, landing an A&R position with the man responsible for the first pop recordings by Sam Cooke

In 1966. White was hired for 40 dollars a week to do A&R work, during this time White flirted with the idea of being a recording artist, making a record called "All in the Run of a Day." But he chose to stick with his A&R duties.   One of the first groups he worked with was the Versatiles who later changed their name to the 5th Dimension, White's first big hit came from Viola Wills, whose "Lost Without the Love of My Guy" went Top 20 in the R&B chart from this success his salary went up to 60 dollars a week.

White started working with Bobby Fuller, Bob Keene and Larry Nunes -- who later became White's true friend.  They all wanted to cut a female act. Barry had heard about a singer named Felice Taylor. They had three hit records, "It May Be Winter Outside," "I'm Under the Influence of Love," and "I Feel Love Coming On." They were huge hits in England.

In 1969, he got his break backing up three talented singers in a girl group called Love Unlimited. the group members honed their talents with White for the next two years until they all signed contracts with 20th Century Records. White produced, wrote and arranged the classic soul ballad "Walking in the Rain (With The One I Love)", which hit the Top 20 of the pop charts. The group would score more hits throughout the '70s and White eventually married the lead singer of the group, Glodean James.

While working on a few demos the record label suggested White step out in front of the microphone, to which he reluctantly agreed. His first solo chart hit in 1973's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby", rose to No 1 in the  R&B charts and No 3 in the Pop chart.

That same year, the Love Unlimited Orchestra's recording of White's composition "Love's Theme" reached No1 in the Pop chart, one of only two instrumental recordings ever to do so. Other chart hits by White included "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" (1973), "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" (1974), "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" (1974), "What Am I Gonna Do With You" (1975), "Let the Music Play" (1976), "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me" (1977), "Your Sweetness is My Weakness" (1978), and "Change" (1982).
Although White's success on the pop charts slowed down as the disco era came to an end, he maintained a loyal following throughout his career. In the 1990s, he mounted an effective comeback with the albums The Icon Is Love (1994), whose biggest hit, "Practice What You Preach" reached the top of the charts, and Staying Power (1999), for which he won 2 Grammy Awards.
Barry White was a Grammy Award winning record producer, songwriter and singer responsible for the creation of numerous hit soul and disco songs. He released 106 gold and 41 platinum albums, 20 gold singles and ten platinum singles.

He created the Love Unlimited Orchestra, which consisted of live musicians, including string and percussion players. Records featuring White's deep bass voice and suave delivery were used by couples wishing to create a romantic ambience. Considered handsome and deeply romantic by his many female fans and admired for the unique blend of soul and classical orchestral musical elements he created, White was often affectionately referred to as the "Maestro" or "The Man with the Velvet Voice".the popular press refer to him as the "Walrus of Love"

White had been ill with chronically high blood pressure for some time, which resulted in renal failure in the autumn of 2002. He suffered a stroke in May 2003, after which he was forced to retire from public life. On July 4, 2003, he died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in West Hollywood, at the age of 58 from renal failure. White was cremated, and his ashes were scattered by his family, and Michael Jackson, off the California coast

On September 20th  2004, Barry White was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York..
